I chose to get in to engineering mainly because my Dad is a senior mechanical design engineer and he inspired me to get into this industry; and I enjoy what it entails.

I chose Rivencore because I knew the skills I would acquire interested me and would give me more trade skills compared to other apprenticeships. This apprenticeship route focuses on mechanical and electrical skills not just one trade.

My day starts early on the shop floor, sometimes with a new task, or perhaps one that is a bit longer. With a mechanical job I would be referring to an engineering drawing; the parts and tools are provided and using the drawing (and sometimes a bill of materials) I will build the mechanical assembly.

Getting work inspected is also a large part of the job. Every job we do has to pass inspection before it can go any further. As I am an apprentice, I do need help sometimes and there are a number of people ( including the Master Technicians) that I can ask for support. I am learning new skills each week and have the opportunity to continue with this further too.

My Favourite project I have worked on so far has to be the cabinets (Enclosures) for the ships. Building these involves mechanical and electrical work.

It’s great that I get on with all the people in my work area and there is always somebody to ask for help if I need it.

Some advice I would give is if you put in the effort, you will get a lot of this industry.
