ENTRY POINT: Level 2 Apprentice – Production

CURRENT LEVEL: Test Technician HNC

I have always been fascinated about how things work and how we can use science and math to solve real world problems.

I left school after GCSE’s wanting to gain hands on industry experience. When I started my apprenticeship in 2019, I undertook level 2 and 3 mechatronics courses teaching me all major disciplines of engineering.

I have a particular interest in electrical and electronic engineering, as I love seeing how a design of a circuit on CAD, can behave in real life when it is built and then finally tested when supplied with power!

After reading up on the company when I left school, I was drawn to their innovative range of products and their great reputation for supporting employee growth.

After 4 years of study and a job rotation around the business (exposing me to different departments), I knew that I preferred electrical and electronic engineering disciplines. This is where my strengths are and with Rivencore’s support I decided to focus my higher education on undertaking an electrical and electronic engineering HNC.

Since then, I have completed my HNC and my apprenticeship, and from then on, I have worked full time as a test engineer. I am now looking to continue with my course studies as supported by the company at degree level. This will support me while I also develop my career with a more installation/field service engineering focussed role. Going forwards I will have the opportunity to apply all the knowledge and skills I have learnt to my next role.

Day to day in my current job role as a test engineer, I ensure that when testing final build stage electrical systems, that they remain safe, and perform in line with product specifications, customer requirements and any relevant regulations/standards – in order to prove that the condition that the product is in when I receive it will, perform as expected when installed in service. Of course, when faults arise, I get to fault find the electrical and electronic systems which is great as I love problem solving.

I also assist with producing and developing test procedures to help ensure that all products can be tested correctly and thoroughly, proving and assuring product/system quality and safety to the highest levels.

We work on a multitude of projects and every day brings a challenge to solve – I love this element of my role. One of the solutions I have implemented has been to design and build a 30V 10A power supply unit that could be variably controlled.

I love problem solving, identifying issues and fixing them. I also love providing long term solutions to make processes more efficient and easier for colleagues at Rivencore, and ultimately our customers.

I would always say that the best way to have a successful career in engineering is by getting an engineering apprenticeship. This is largely because you will learn more through hands on/real world experience, whilst also getting paid to learn. Learning is a lifelong skill and the more you engage with the process the more you will achieve throughout your career.
